Bend, OR Public Works Campus – Structural Driving Design

December 9, 2025 @ 7:30 am - 9:30 am

Bend, OR Public Works Campus – Structural Driving Design

The December DBIA Breakfast will be held in Bend only. The Public Works Campus team will present on how the Progressive Design Build process was able to leverage early coordination with the CLT vendor to maximize the coordination of the structural design and other trade integration to improve the efficiency and costs of the project. Following the presentation there will be an optional tour of the building for all those that are present in person. DBIA Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe how early contractor and vendor engagement in a Progressive Design-Build process improves coordination, enhances decision-making, and reduces project risk.
  2. Explain how collaborative design-build workflows can optimize structural system planning to achieve greater efficiency, constructability, and cost performance.
  3. Evaluate how integrating a CLT vendor early in the design-build process supports seamless trade coordination, improves design accuracy, and delivers measurable value for public-sector projects.

AIA Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain methods for coordinating construction and vendor input during the design process to improve constructability and reduce project risks.
  2. Identify strategies for planning building layouts and structural systems that maximize structural efficiency while maintaining code compliance and occupant safety.
  3. Describe the processes and best practices for ensuring structural integrity through effective quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures.
  4. Discuss methods for integrating architectural and structural engineering principles to create coordinated, safe, and high-performing building designs.

We kindly ask all in-person attendees to bring non-perishable food items to support a food drive hosted by the City of Bend.

He has experience in all construction types, including steel, conventional and post-tensioned concrete, masonry, wood, heavy timber and CLT, and light gauge. Shawn believes that successful projects start with creative problem-solving, leveraging the expertise of trade partners and the Design-Builder/CMGC to create cost-effective designs, and achieving client satisfaction through team collaboration and open communication, all of which is exemplified by his DBIA certification. Nick Sackos, AIA Nick is an experienced project architect who excels at navigating complex project requirements, building consensus, clearly articulating design visions to stakeholders, and crafting efficient solutions. Nick brings extensive experience in diverse and complex program types from previous roles and is recently graduated from the 2024–2025 Leadership Bend community development program. He approaches each project as a collaborative effort, maintaining an open mind and engaging in active listening and constructive dialogue. He has spent over three years as a project architect for the Design-Build City of Bend Public Works Campus, co-located with the owner, contractor, consultant and trade partner teams as the project has progressed from preliminary programming to over 13 permit packages and then through construction and to the ongoing closeout and post-occupancy work. Mike Taylor Mike Taylor is Vice President of Kirby Nagelhout Construction Company (KNCC), an award-winning general contractor headquartered in Bend with regional offices in Portland and Pendleton. With a tenure of over 34 years at KNCC, throughout this time, he has been actively involved in steering the success of KNCC’s projects, including many under the Design-Build delivery method. He is a creative thinker and brings a solution-oriented approach on every project he leads. Recently, he provided project oversight as the Project Executive for the Progressive-Design-Build City of Bend Public Works Campus project. He is also an active member of DBIA (Design-Build Institute of America). Jo Wells, RA, DBIA Jo Wells has been in the architectural field for 24 years and working with the owner side since 2005. For that past 9 years she has had a focus on Progressive-Design-Build delivery including the award-winning Portland Building and is now leading the City of Bend’s Public Works Campus project.
