The Northwest Region of DBIA

In 2002 a group of architects, engineers, and contractors chartered the Design-Build Institute of America Northwest Region (DBIANW) to support and promote the use of integrated design and construction practices for public and private projects throughout Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Design-build construction spending is anticipated to grow 18% nationally from 2018-2021, and DBIANW’s primary goals are to educate our members on how to win design-build projects, and once secured, how to successfully execute and deliver these projects. We also aim to be the local and regional “go-to” resource for owners and members of the A/E/C community regarding trends, case studies, educational programming, legislative updates, certification, and events related to design-build in the Transportation, Water/Wastewater, Higher Education, K-12, Healthcare, and Military/Federal markets.

In addition to excellent networking opportunities, our monthly programming covers topics such as project procurement, risk management, team building, case studies and lessons-learned, and perennial favorite – Owners’ Pipeline, where a panel of owners discuss upcoming design-build projects.

Why Do Design-Build?

The DBIA video project was facilitated by the DBIA NW Regional Marketing Committee and by hiring Little Fish Video Productions out of Spokane, Washington. Through planning sessions the group created a document called a creative brief that served as a guiding document for interviews, topics and the projects to visit. The three main topics for the videos included, Why Join DBIA, Why Design-Build, and Myths about Design-Build. The production team was able to visit the First Interstate Center for the Arts (remodel), the University of Washington Population Health Building (new construction), ,the Portland Building (remodel) and a monthly Seattle Chapter meeting to capture the b-roll you see in the clips. On site, we were able to interview a diverse cross-section of architects, owners, suppliers and engineers who gave us an excellent glimpse into the world of Design-Build.

From our Members

Design-Build makes it possible to truly enjoy what I do for a living. It allows me to build the team that I need, who will work together to successfully tackle all the complex moving parts that make up Capital project delivery. It eliminates the random marriage of skills and personalities that comes when teams are built by picking the lowest price and the constant battle to protect yourself or the project from those same people. With Design-Build, I can focus on getting the right people on the team and then enjoy working together to build these amazing projects!

Tim Graybeal, Lydig Construction

With design-build working closely with the team has helped me understand the entire team’s needs better to improve the overall design process. Because of the early collaboration process, I have made better connections and long-lasting relationships.

Blanca Rodriguez, Integrus Architecture
